Scully survived a pelvic fracture and is now enjoying life in her new adoptive home.

Time Heals, But Only Love Renews

Picasso Veterinary Fund in Action! (February 2009)

Scully, a young tuxedo cat, arrived as an injured stray at Animal Care & Control's Brooklyn shelter, where AC&C veterinarians diagnosed her injury as a pelvic fracture. Perhaps she was hit by a car, or mistreated by a human — we'll never know.

Gisella McSweeney of Zani's Furry Friends, an Alliance Participating Organization, saw Scully at the shelter and agreed to take her into her rescue group's care and to find her a permanent home. But Scully's injuries would need medical attention before she could be placed for adoption, and so the Mayor's Alliance agreed to have Scully's treatment paid for by the Picasso Veterinary Fund (PVF).

The Mayor's Alliance arranged for Scully to be transferred to ABC Animal Hospital in Manhattan, one of the excellent veterinary hospitals that routinely provide care for cats and dogs from the PVF program. An ABC veterinarian confirmed the diagnosis of a pelvic fracture, probably an old injury, but advised that a risky surgery was not recommended. Scully's injury would heal on its own.

Gisella took Scully home and cared for her until the fracture healed. Shortly thereafter, an adopter fell in love with the sweet six-pound tuxedo and Scully was home free. She might always have a bit of a limp, but she's not in pain, and she's sure to have enough love and attention to compensate.

Scully, like many injured or sick animals that come into AC&C shelters, just needed a little help to get back into shape so she could be placed into a permanent home. And that's why the Picasso Veterinary Fund exists — to give these special animals a second chance to find the love they so deserve.

While Scully is basking in the comfort of a new home, some other deserving cats and dogs whose medical care was paid for by the PVF are still awaiting permanent homes. If you're thinking of adopting, please pay a visit to the PVF adoption page and meet these wonderful animals.

Or, if you aren't in a position to adopt right now, please make a convenient online donation to the fund — and perhaps sign up to make recurring donations each month. The Picasso Veterinary Fund is supported entirely by private donations from individuals and businesses, and so we depend upon the generosity of caring people like you to continue its lifesaving work.

If you were to ask Scully, she would tell you that there's nothing better than getting a second chance!

If you're a Facebook member who wants to support the Picasso Veterinary Fund (PVF) and pet adoption in New York City, now's your chance!

Earlier this month, we created a Facebook Cause as a tool to raise funds for the PVF and post interesting articles, announcements, and news about how the fund is helping New York City's homeless animals. We hope that every person who joins the Cause will invite some of their Facebook "friends" to also join — which could potentially inspire some great conversations and public education about pet adoption and the valuable work of the PVF.
