Mickey Makes a Comeback…Now He Needs a Home!

Picasso Veterinary Fund in Action! (February 2008)

In mid-January, Mickey was picked up as a stray in Brooklyn with what appeared to be a chemical burn on his sides and hindquarters. NYPD officers took him to the Animal Care & Control Center at 2336 Linden Boulevard, where veterinarians did a skin scraping to rule out sarcoptic mange as the cause of Mickey's skin lesions and hair loss. When, after several days, Mickey didn't respond to treatment, AC&C personnel contacted the Mayor's Alliance to find out if Mickey could be seen by a skin specialist through the Picasso Veterinary Fund.

When NYPD officers found Mickey on the street, his skin was in such horrific condition that he appeared to be suffering from a chemical burn.

When NYPD officers found Mickey on the street, his skin was in such horrific condition that he appeared to be suffering from a chemical burn.

So Mickey was transferred to Fifth Avenue Veterinary Specialists (FAVS), one of the excellent specialty hospitals that treats many Picasso animals for the Mayor's Alliance. There, skin biopsies revealed that Mickey was suffering from stress mange. He was treated with Ivermectin, a broad-spectrum anti-parasite medication, and was placed in an area of the hospital where he could recover in relative peace and quiet.

The quiet rest and attentive care Mickey received at the hospital resulted in a speedy recovery. Soon his inflamed skin began to heal and the hair began to grow back. Because Mickey enjoys being with people and gets along well with other dogs, he clearly welcomed his return to a more "social" environment. When he was ready, he was transferred to Murray Hill Pet Hospital, another Mayor's Alliance partner veterinary hospital, where he was neutered.

Now Mickey is ready and waiting for a loving home where his engaging personality can blossom. If you or someone you know might be interested in welcoming this sweet and social three-year-old into your household, please contact Siobhan Healy at the Mayor's Alliance at siobhan@AnimalAllianceNYC.org.

After treatment and quiet cage-rest at Fifth Avenue Veterinary Specialists, Mickey is in tip-top shape and ready to be adopted.

Maybe you're not looking to add to your household right now, but want to help other animals like Mickey get a second chance for a good life through the Picasso Veterinary Fund. Your donation of $10, $200…$1000 — whatever you can give — will help us spread second chances around, and ensure that more sick or injured dogs and cats from New York City's AC&C shelters can make a comeback.
