You Can't Keep a Real Lady Down

Picasso Veterinary Fund in Action! (July 2010)

Last month, Animal Care & Control of NYC (AC&C) Field Operations picked up an injured cat on Saint Lawrence Avenue in the Bronx. Apparently Lady was a "high-rise cat," who, as happens far too often in the city, especially during the summer, fell out a window of her apartment building. Sadly, her owner apparently didn't care enough to file a lost cat report with AC&C or come to the shelter to look for her.

Lady was "lucky" — the fall didn't kill her — but she sustained a prolapsed left eye and a fractured jaw. Lady was brought to the AC&C Manhattan shelter, where staff contacted the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals for help. We arranged for Lady to be transferred to Fifth Avenue Veterinary Specialists (FAVS), one of our partner veterinary hospitals, for treatment. The Picasso Veterinary Fund of the Mayor's Alliance paid her medical expenses.

Despite her serious injuries, Lady's surgery at FAVS was clean and quick. Her damaged eye was removed, and her fractured jaw was repaired and wired. Following surgery, we transferred Lady to Murray Hill Pet Hospital, another Mayor's Alliance partner hospital, where she recovered from her ordeal.

Fifth Avenue Veterinary Specialists performed the surgery needed to repair the eye and jaw injuries Lady sustained in her fall from a high-rise.

As luck would have it, Dr. Dan Lauridia, who owns Murray Hill Pet Hospital, knew a family that wanted to adopt Lady. So our lucky Lady now is living like a queen with a very happy family.

We don't know how many of her nine lives Lady has used. But we do know that Lady, like so many of the cats and dogs who get help from the Picasso Veterinary Fund, is lucky to be alive. For one thing, she's lucky to have survived the fall. And she's fortunate that the Picasso Veterinary Fund was there to "catch" her. Were it not for the Fund, Lady likely would have been euthanized because money to pay for her surgery would not have been available. And she never would have experienced the love she's getting in her new adoptive home.

When you donate to the Picasso Veterinary Fund, you're helping us provide second chances to very special Little New Yorkers who, like Lady, will make wonderful companions. And you'll experience the satisfaction of knowing that you've helped save an important life.

So make a donation for Lady, or for any one of the hundreds of dogs and cats who are yet to benefit from the Fund. To meet some of the other animals who the Fund has helped, visit our Picasso Pet Scrapbook.

We appreciate your support — and so do the animals!

Prevent a Tragedy!

Lady's accident serves as a reminder to everyone with pets that they should have screens in all their windows, and if you have a balcony, never allow cats (or dogs that might leap over the side) to go onto it. You might think you pet won't jump or fall, but if that irresistible pigeon flies by, tragedy could result.
